Von Glitschka creates visual identities, characters, and logos for high-profile ad agencies and companies around the world. But he still believes in the power of taking the brain offline—stepping away from the computer and using 'analog' methods to solve design challenges. For Von, this means drawing. It's free, it's quick, it's liberating, and it makes design accessible to almost anyone. And by putting his pen to paper first, Von comes away with dozens of ideas that can be translated into digital designs.
Take a trip to Salem, Oregon, and watch this master designer at work as he sketches his ideas and refines them in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Then join Von at play as he trawls junkyards on the hunt for color, texture, and patterns to use in his designs. He also lets us in on his 5ive Minute Logo project, a tongue-in-cheek response to the rise of cheap online design clearinghouses that turned, ironically, into a great creative outlet. As he says, even if he wanted to make it, 'life is too short for bad art.'Skills covered in this course

- [Voiceover] Every job I've had, I've used my drawing skills to solve design problems. It's like solving a graphic mystery. Before I ever touch the computer in terms of building my artwork, I already know pretty much what the design is gonna look like. It removes the guesswork and it becomes more of craftsmanship. Fiveminutelogo.com is a good creative exercise for me because it forces me to not over think things. I think it's always good to step outside of your normal routine and expand how you work. Texture exploring for me, it's a creative exercise. As much as I like digital artwork, it can come off too clean, too perfect. Textures gives humanity to digital art. Turn it so we can shoot that and make sure you get the whole board. Most designers, when they step outside of the context of their work, they're gonna discover new worlds of opportunity. that is poorly designed rather than trying to help the situation and improve it. of a raster image to produce a vector image. So, you get this kind of sloppy graphics. You get stuff like this, where you have this little sliver of a shape here. If we zoom in on this, de-select it, you can see how it's overlapping. Just really bad. You have some kind of stroke out here that doesn't even correspond to the edge of the shape underneath it. So really bad in terms of its craftsmanship, in terms of its shape and form, and probably the worst area here, this is really hard to believe, is the feet. I mean, really? This is the best you can do with our national symbol, the eagle? And this is the... It looks like poorly crafted tortilla shells or taco chips, or whatever. Just really bad. And so, I think we're going to be able to improve on all of this. The artwork is overly complicated, too, And this is so we can eat away the elements of the key. So, I'm going to go ahead and Minus Front with that,… -
